Group Class Schedule
Group class instruction is offered at several levels on Sunday mornings, with classes organized according to student skills and experience:
___ Beginners - Sundays 9:00 AM.
For students age 9 or below who have never played chess before or who know how some of the pieces move but do not know all of the rules of chess and have have limited playing experience. Covers everything needed to get started playing a complete game of chess. How the pieces move, check, checkmate, stalemate, castling, pawn promotion, capturing en passant and other important rules of the game. Supervised play following class. Beginning students often take from one to three private lessons, rather than group lessons, in order to prepare them for the Novice Group Class.
___ Novice Group - Sundays 10:00 AM.
For students age 11 or below who have advanced from the Beginner Class or have equivalent skills as determined by the instructor. Introduction to the tactical elements, ideas behind the standard openings, middle game concepts and endgame principles. Introduction to chess notation. Following class, students play against one another.
___ Intermediate Group - Sundays 11:00 AM.
For students age 13 or below who have advanced from the Novice Class or have equivalent skills. Covers more comprehensive and complex tactics, endgames and openings. Introduction to positional concepts and middle game strategies. USCF Membership is encouraged for this group. Approximately once per month an optional Class Tournament will be held between class members using score sheets and clocks. Additional USCF-rated tournaments are sponsored by the Club (see Club Membership).
___ Advanced Group - Sundays 12:00 PM.
For students age 15 or below who have been promoted from the Intermediate Class or have equivalent skills. Covers more comprehensive and complex tactics, endgames and openings. Advanced positional concepts and middle game strategies. USCF Membership is required for this group. Regular attendance is reqired for this group. Approximately once per month a Class Tournament will be held between class members using score sheets and clocks. Additional USCF-rated tournaments are sponsored by the Club (see Club Membership).
____ Teen & Adult Beginners - See Dr. Koblentz re: Private Lessons
____ Teen & Adult Novice/Intermediate Group - Times TBD
For students age 16 and up and rated USCF 799 and below. USCF Membership strongly encouraged.
____ Teen & Adult Advanced Group - Times TBD
For students rated age 16 and up USCF 800 and above. USCF Membership required.
Please call ahead for availability of group classes. New students at any level are encouraged to take one private lesson for placement. It is important that Beginners start at the beginning of the four-lesson block, or take private lesson(s) to cover the missed material. Students rated over 1000 USCF are strongly encouraged to take private lessons.
Please do not bring chess sets or clocks to class - all necessary equipment is provided.
